ANOTHER CLASSIC
Besides being a cool photo from Daytona, it reminds me of a lot of things that day in 1985. First, I had struggled early in the season, as did the rest of the team except for Ron Lechien. He was flying both nights in Seattle and in Atlanta, but in our heat race on this particular day I finally rode decent and kept pace with the Machine until the last lap when he missed a line and I snuck by for the win. Next, even though I felt good and had a heat win, there were some sort of pills circulating at that time, I’m not sure if they were Race Caps, but it was some sort of stimulant type pill for MX and it said take 2, so I took 4! I ended up riding totally hyper early in the main and passed Jeff Ward for the lead briefly, but crashed while in a position to win my second straight Daytona. I got all anxious in a blind spot with flags waving and high sided off the back of Guy Cooper who had gone down and was trying to get out my way. My visor came off in the crash and I looked like a bowling ball the rest of the main and got 4th. Later in the race Wardy fell and the Hurricane roosted all over his bike, literally! That turned out to be Hannah’s last SX win and marked the first year the track didn’t cross pit road. It’s almost funny how small those grandstands are in the background. If that same shot were taken today, the top of the stands would be out of range.
I just signed a bunch of these poster sized prints and you can purchase one and check out more gems at www.buckleyphotos.com
