WHO IS NUMBER ONE?
While digging through old photos recently, I found this one of Broc Glover and I battling on our 500’s at Gatorback in 1984. With all the discussion going on right now about Voss running the #1 in the WSX rounds and whether Reed should run it, I thought this photo was an interesting perspective. Broc was the 500 National Champion in 1983 and was running the plate he earned. On the other hand, I was the 250, SX and Grand National Champion (highest point total for the season), which was a new title created by Wrangler. So for the first time in MX history I earned the Blue and Yellow #1, which could be run in any class. With Bob Hannah racing the 250 class in ’84, Honda and I decided to spread the team out and not put me in the 250 class again when Hannah was capable of winning there. Johnny O (defending 125 champ) was running the #1 plate in the 125 class, and I decided to move up to the 500 class, a class I really wanted to win. That caused some confusion and took a little something away from Broc. That wasn’t my intention, but it was a strange sight when Broc and I diced it with two #1’s.
The World SX rounds are great for the guys who feel the need to get dialed in before Anaheim, but the two series’ are confusing in my opinion to any new viewers. I think it’s great that RC is attending the WSX races, but at the same time the absence of Reed, Windham, Stewart and others makes it pretty weak for TV and the overall look of SX. I totally see their side for waiting until Anaheim, but still, it’s just as weird as Broc and I wearing the same number in the same series. I believe WSX puts the riders in an awkward position to have to choose. I'm sure RC (who looked great) would feel much better right now if he had beaten EVERYONE, and it's probably a little strange for those who didn't attend to be watching from home. The GNC title was cool and I won it twice, but it doesn’t show up anywhere in the record books and the truth is, it was confusing and didn’t really matter. World SX is an interesting concept and it has its good points, but I hope it’s going somewhere because the way it is right now doesn’t make any sense.
